The Preparatory Department for international students provides training for pursuing professional academic programs in Russian. Classes are conducted in Russian in small groups of up to 10 students.
For students preparing to enter the first year of a bachelor's program, the curriculum includes not only Russian language but also mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering graphics, and chemistry. For those applying to master's or PhD programs, the training includes Russian language as a means of communication and the study of specialized terminology.

- Admission of international applicants to the Preparatory Department of MPEI is carried out:
- On a state-funded basis (within the quota of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation)
- Under education (tuition) contracts (under paid educational service agreements)
- International students enrolled in the Preparatory Department of NRU "MPEI" are guaranteed a place in a Student Dormitory.
To enroll in the Preparatory Department of NRU "MPEI", applicants must submit the following documents:
- Original passport
- A copy of the passport’s first page and visa (if applicable)
- Originals of educational documents (diploma and transcript)
- Notarized translation into Russian of the passport and educational documents
- A copy of all passport pages
- Four 3×4 cm photographs
- Medical insurance (if using a personal insurance policy, provide a copy of the agreement)
- Medical certificates, including: a valid chest X-ray (fluorography), proof of measles vaccination, and confirmation of absence of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and all types of hepatitis
